Chester Charles Bennington (March 20, 1976 – July 20, 2017) was an American singer and songwriter best known as the frontman for the rock band Linkin Park
Bennington died of suicide by hanging at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California; his housekeeper discovered his body around 9:00 a.m. PDT on July 20, 2017.[46][47] Shinoda confirmed his death on Twitter, writing, "Shocked and heartbroken, but it's true. An official statement will come out as soon as we have one".[48] It was confirmed on the following day from Brian Elias, chief of operations for the office of the medical examiner-coroner, that alcohol was in possession at the time of Bennington's death as it was halfway drunk. There was no signs of illegal drugs being used at the time even though Bennington has been in multiple battles with drug and alcohol abuse before.[49] The band announced that they will not be doing the North American tour following Bennington's death and the tickets will be refunded to the people that have already bought them.[50]
Bennington's death occurred on what would have been Chris Cornell's 53rd birthday.[51] Cornell, who was a close friend of Bennington, had also died of suicide by hanging two months prior.[51] Shinoda noted that Bennington was very aggrieved when the band performed "One More Light" in his honor, where he could not finish singing the song, be it in rehearsal or live recording.[52][53] Bennington sang Leonard Cohen's song "Hallelujah" at Cornell's funeral.[51] He was also the godfather of Cornell's son Christopher.[51][54]
